Founded in 1999 as the Microenterprise Development Institute, the Carsey Institute’s Sustainable Microenterprise and Development Program (SMDP) provides training and networking opportunities for practitioners in the fields of microfinance, enterprise development, social enterprise, and community-based and rural development. The SMDP training workshops have been rated as “very good” to “excellent” by 98 percent of program participants. Since its inception, the program has provided an affordable, high quality, and accessible professional development opportunity which counts among its alumni many of today’s leaders of the development finance field.

The SMDP webinars cover a wide range of topics from microfinance, enterprise development, social enterprise, savings groups and more.

During our June 19th SMDP Webinar we will talk to Mr. Chuck Waterfield, CEO of Microfinance Transparency (MFT), about what motivates different MFIs to participate in the act of divulging prices and the push and pull forces that stakeholders from donors to networks to regulators use to foster transparency and price fairness. Chuck will also introduce MFT’s Truth in Lending Tables (TILT) which provides complete and comparable data from hundreds of MFIs on the true prices charged to microfinance clients. And finally, we’ll ask him to prognosticate about where the industry is going and what are the most important internal and external threats we may be facing.
